How To Find A Cheap Website Design Company

Posted in Web Design

If you search for “cheap website design” on Google’s search bar, you will see that there are many companies out there claiming to specialize in affordable web design only to realize, when you follow their links, that the prices these companies quote are nothing but cheap.

Affordable web design

So what should you look for when selecting an agency for your next web design project:

1) The experience of the web designer behind the ad

Over the years, the internet has undergone a continuous transformation, driven for the most part by advances in technology.  It is fair to say that today’s website designs bare very little resemblance to those of a few years ago.  From simple html to complex coding languages a website of yesteryear would look entirely out of place when compared with designs of today.

Any serious web designer worth his or her salt will have to have evolved at the same pace as that of the technology that the online business is now driven by.  That means that in effect web designers need to re-invent themselves every few years just to keep up with these advancements and understand that technologies that they may have once mastered are all of a sudden frowned upon by the industry.  Flash being one of them.

2) The business know how of the web designer

When it comes to small business website designs, whilst affordability is certainly a determining factor in the selection of a web designer for your project, his or her business experience is even more important.  Web re-design is one of today’s more popular request and there are several good reasons why web sites need to be refreshed and re-designed.

  • Modernize an old site to make it current with today’s technologies
  • Make it mobile friendly so that it can be used and seen on any device
  • Change a site so that it becomes user-friendly rather then mix mash of a bunch of technologies that look good to the eyes but mean nothing to a potential customer.

In other words, your next website should be designed with one goal.  To show to its visitors what they need, rather than what you think they want.

What has not changed though are the sound business principles required to make a website successful in today’s hyper competitive internet market.

3) It’s not because the web agency is based in India that their prices are cheap

If you ever thought that we live in a small world, then think internet and you’ll realize how small our world has really become.

As a web designer, with a successful online presence, you would be astounded to know how many emails I get from companies based in India who offer their services to me.  Their emails always start the same way and always look promising.  Here is an example of a recent exchange between one such company and mysel:

Hi Sir/Madam

Can you outsource some web design business to us? We will work according to you and your clients and for a long term relationship we can start our services in only $99 per month per website. Looking forward for your positive reply.

Thanks & Regards

Here is my response

I am willing to try your services on a new website based on your $99 per month offer. I will provide all the content all you need to do is take care of the design.

Their response

Great.  How many pages of content will your provide us with.

My reponse

For the first website, probably not more than 5 pages

Their response

Sure, no problem.  To design and develop the website as you have instructed, we will take 8 to 10 days time and for this we will charge $500 to $750 maximum.  Please advice

My response

You are are quoting me a price that is even more expensive than what I charge even though the costs of operating a business in the US are much, much higher than those in India.  What happened to the $99 per month offer you made in the first place?

Their response

1st month you need to pay us one time setup fees $300 and monthly $99 total $399
2nd month $99
3rd month $99

Etc… The above is but one example of the dozens of emails I get every day. It has never failed.  Whenever I have tried to look into the possibility of hiring a web design agency from India on the basis of affordability, their prices, invariably turn out to be more expensite that if I was to sub-contract work to a local web designers.

What you should look for when selecting a designer for your website

Another thing that you need to consider is the back-end programming of the website, specifically, you need to know what programming the web designer uses to make it easy for you to update the website and upload content to it. While in the past most websites were built with HTML, right now there are many, many programming languages that a website can be built on. Really, you don’t want a designer that makes itself indispensable by not telling you how you can update your website.

Having a great looking website design is only one part of the equation. To be seen in search engines, you need to hire a designer with a sound knowledge of SEO principles.

Still, another factor that you need to consider when choosing a web design company to hire are the other services on its menu. All websites need to rank or at least be searchable on Google, however, not all web design companies offer SEO services. Sure, you can always look for local SEO agencies, but if you’re the busy person that we think you are, you do not have the time to vet local companies for their Search Engine Optimization Services.

A web design company can cost hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars per website depending on the complexity of the website. Based on our experience, there are those that offer only pure web design while there are those that offer complete services, from design, programming to SEO. If you are building a rather complex website that has a set of different sophisticated functionalities, you might want to hire a web development company.

Not all web design/web development companies are created alike, and there are those that are above other in terms of the quality of their work and their level of customer service. That said, always do research on at least three companies before hiring. Search for a company’s name on Google and see what former customers are saying about it.
